WHEN the starting gun goes off, Elmina Ng gets racing and is quickly becoming more at home on the track.
The 10-year-old rising star from Abbotsleigh Private Girls School is rising up the ranks of the cross country domain, and she wants to go even further.
In a field of more than 100 girls, Elmina secured a top-10 finish at the IPSHA Cross Country Carnival last month, coming ninth over the 2000m journey.
Taking on the challenging course at The Kings School, it marks one of her best ever performances in her chosen field.
“We’re so proud of her,” father Kelvin Ng said.
“She’s shown a good ability in both the sprint distances and over the longer trips.
“Elmina has been very dedicated to her running. But most importantly she has a lot of fun while doing it.”
The top-10 effort continues a stark improvement for young Elmina, after coming 21st over the 2km back in 2021.
Attention now turns to a state-based event, where she will line up against some of the top young running guns in New South Wales.
The NSW CIS Cross Country event takes place in June, with training stepping up in preparation for the big event.
It’s there that Elmina is one of nine Abbotsleigh students who will take to the testing course on June 8 at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre.
“She’s been training every Tuesday and Thursday morning for the event,” Ng said.
“Elmina is a little bit nervous but mostly excited for it.”
Away from the running track, Elmina also enjoys playing football, as well as playing the violin.
It’s there she plays for the Sydney Youth Orchestra every weekend.
Elmina has also received a FINE award at Abbotsleigh for being a ‘fun, inclusive and nurturing student’.
