Yarra Bay, Little Bay: ‘Grubs’ slammed for huge mess at popular beaches

Beachgoers have been slammed as ‘grubs’ and ‘disgusting’ after piles of rubbish were left on the sand along two southeast Sydney beaches. Many are now calling for action.

Yarra Bay Beach trashed

Residents in southeast Sydney have been left fuming after two beloved beaches were trashed at the weekend by “grubs” leaving behind a staggering amount of rubbish.

As temperatures soared on Saturday and Sunday, popular beaches across the Randwick Council area were inundated by people trying to escape the heat.

Despite the council praising the behaviour of most beachgoers, a shocking video emerged of Yarra Bay Beach being left in an atrocious condition on Sunday morning.

The video has since been shared hundreds of times on social media and received widespread backlash.

Those responsible for the mess were described as “disrespectful”, “grubs” and “disgusting”.

The woman who took the video, who did not want to be named, said she came across the mess while going for a morning walk about 6.30am on Sunday.

The video shows rubbish, bottles, and even eskies scattered across the beach.

Rubbish also had to be collected from nearby Little Bay Beach on Sunday morning after council was notified of trash being left behind.

Randwick Mayor Danny Said said it was disappointing and he reminded people all beaches were alcohol free in the area.

“It was disappointing to see some rubbish left on Yarra Bay and Little Bay Beach.

“I understand this was left by some gatherings at these two locations.

“Our outdoor crews attended both sites and had the beaches cleaned up quickly on Sunday morning – removing some 50 bags of rubbish,” he said.

“I’d also remind beach goers that all beaches are alcohol free and many beachside parks are also alcohol free.

“Police and rangers are actively patrolling and enforcing this rule. Over the summer public holidays there will be a total alcohol ban at all coastal reserves across Randwick City.”

He said, on the whole, he commended most beach goers for practising social distancing and for their good behaviour.

A police spokeswoman stated they were called to Yarra Beach on Sunday morning but all persons had dispersed by the time police arrived.

“No persons were sighted by police and no infringements were issued,” she said.

One person wrote on Facebook, regarding the Yarra Bay mess: “This is ridiculous ... if you can carry it down there you can carry it to the bin as well.”

Another person posted: “To say we are upset is an understatement. This is where local families come to swim.”

One person claimed there should be more bins installed at Yarra Bay Beach during summer.
