A former Bra Boys member who shot to fame as a pro surfer has fronted a Sydney court charged with assault while on parole for importing commercial quantities of cocaine.

Wayne Cleveland appeared in Waverley Local Court on Thursday after allegedly assaulting two men in Chifley just after 3.45pm on March 31 this year.

In mentioning his charges, Magistrate Greg Grogin said Cleveland had allegedly “knocked some guy on the head” and “caused him to fall to the ground and lose consciousness”.

“These are serious charges,” Magistrate Grogin said.

The court heard Cleveland was on parole at the time of the offence after being sentenced to 16 years in jail for the importation of commercial quantities of cocaine in 2009.

Lawyers for Cleveland submitted his work towards rehabilitation in the community had “already commenced” through his work at ConFit – an organisation that assists former prisoners with fitness training after their release from jail.

Cleveland smiled and winked at members of the organisation who filled the court on Thursday to support him in the hearing.

The 48-year-old appeared in a promotional ConFit video earlier this year, saying his work as a trainer has enabled him to “give back to his community” and create a positive impact in society by encouraging young people to stay on the “straight and narrow”.

Magistrate Grogin granted Cleveland bail on the condition he report to police three times a week and not have contact with the two alleged victims.

Cleveland, whose parole is due to expire in 2025, will reappear in Waverley Court on April 30.
