A Pagewood man has fronted court accused of making sexual comments to a schoolgirl on a bus in Sydney’s east.

Steven Brimelow, 29, from Pagewood, was arrested this week after police investigated an alleged incident which happened on Wednesday afternoon.

Police will allege about 2.30pm on Wednesday a 13-year-old schoolgirl was travelling on a bus near Randwick when Brimelow boarded the bus and sat behind her.

Police will allege the man struck up a conversation with the girl who was wearing a school uniform, before allegedly making inappropriate sexual comments toward her.

Brimelow appeared in Waverley Local Court on Friday.

Police will allege he also touched the girl as she left the bus.

She told her parents when she arrived home and they contacted police who investigated and arrested Brimelow at his housing commission home in Pagewood.

Brimelow, sporting an LA Lakers singlet, appeared in Waverley Local Court on Friday charged with procure child under 14 years for unlawful sexual activity.

He applied for bail which was granted with strict conditions including reporting to police every day.

The prosecutor had opposed bail in court and stated it was an alleged offence against a vulnerable member of the community, being a young schoolgirl who was alone at the time.

“He made statements of a very sexual nature and in my submission the accused was fully aware that she was of school age. She was wearing a school uniform.”

Brimelow’s legal aid lawyer stated he had a limited criminal record and had no offences since 2009. He also claimed he did not know the alleged victim and would not be a risk to the alleged victim if released on bail.

Magistrate Jacqueline Trad granted bail with strict conditions.

However, she noted it was a serious allegation which involved his making alleged comments relating to a sexual “proposition”.

“He waited until the young girl was effectively on her own (on the bus) before the approach. So it appears to be calculated in terms of seeing an opportunity.”

The court heard police had CCTV footage relating to the incident.

As part of his bail conditions, he must reside in Pagewood, report daily to police, not go near or try to contact the alleged victim, not be in contact of any young person under 16 (that he is not related to), not approach any school children, and not enter any schools.
