Maroubra mates to catch 100 Waves for orphaned children

CATCHING as many waves as possible is the general idea when surfing, but in the case of these Maroubra mates, each ride will make a difference in the lives of underprivileged children.

CATCHING as many waves as possible is the general idea when surfing, but in the case of these Maroubra mates, each ride will make a difference in the lives of underprivileged children.

Jordan Gilbert came up with the idea for the 100 Waves fundraiser as an extension of an Anglican Aid event held by his church, St John’s Maroubra, in 2014.

This year for the first time Mr Gilbert will be joined by friends Jacob Hadges, Ethan Ford and Gully Thomas to surf the north corner of Maroubra on Monday from 7.30am, raising money for the SOAR orphanage in East Asia.

“It’s a special-needs orphanage which houses about 50 kids — a lot of them didn’t have beds, clothing or basic life necessities,” Mr Gilbert said.

“The project assesses the kids individually and provides them with individual care plans ... it’s tough physically but that’s great motivation to keep paddling out.”

The four men will try to surf 100 waves each, sponsored individually.
