Girls encouraged to play rugby with South East Magic 7s

South East Magic 7s is gearing up for an exciting season of Rugby Sevens and is encouraging girls of all ages to join up.

A new Rugby Sevens season will soon kick off and if you are female the club for you is South East Magic.

Formed in 2012 as the first all female Rugby Sevens club in Australia, South East Magic 7s cater for girls in southern and eastern Sydney from ages 9 to the open division.

Jane Westaway of South East Magic said the club had an “amazing 2018 season”, winning the NSW State Championships in the under 16s, the Lake Macquarie 7s in the open division and the Sydney City Championships in U16s.

Two girls, Tia Hinds and Bienne Terita, were also selected to play for Australian in the World Schools Tournament in New Zealand.

Westaway said last season there were more than 130 girls playing for the club.

“We make all girls feel part of the team from new players to our representative level players. We encourage or girls to live and breathe by our club motto ‘Proud of Our Girls’ — this is core to being part of the ‘Magic Family’,” Westaway said.

“Nothing gives us more pleasure than seeing our local south and eastern suburbs girls go from strength to strength playing what they love.”

The season involves a “sizzling sevens” competition played on Saturday nights and tournaments where the girls can play teams from Sydney clubs such as Wests, Blacktown, Gordon and as far away as the Hunter Valley and Illawarra.

The South East Magic Under 15s team won their division at the NSW Rugby State Sevens Championships in 2017.
