Decision time for Maroubra Bowlo plan
Maroubra residents have told a court exactly what they think of the proposed demolition of the former Maroubra Bowling Club for a four-storey aged care complex. Here's what they said.
“A massive over-development.”
Residents and Maroubra state Labor MP Michael Daley were at the venue yesterday for a Land and Environment Court on-site hearing and the people told the court exactly what they thought.
Catholic Healthcare, which bought the site at the corner of Mons Ave and Malabar Rd from the RSL in 2016, wants to rezone it from private recreation to aged care.
The organisation would redevelop the land for four buildings.
These buildings would include an aged care centre of 108 beds, 56 seniors homes, communal areas and an underground carpark for 93 vehicles.
Catholic Healthcare started legal action last year after Randwick Council needed more time to assess the $75 million plans than is usually allowed.
Residents and Catholic Healthcare representatives gathered at the venue and outlined their positions to Justice John Robson.
The hearing, which is expected to take four days, continues at Macquarie St, Sydney.
Resident Claire Bettington told the Courier the proposed project was a massive over-development.
“It will set a precedent if it gets through, with implications for the whole suburb,” she said.
“The design should be modified to a maximum three storeys. It is way too massive a development for this small block.”
Mr Daley had not registered to address the court but told the Courier the proposal was too big and bulky.
“We’re talking a building of 26m that will be taller than the Maroubra Seals club,” he said.
“It’s absolutely not on. The residents oppose it and I’m absolutely with them.”
The venue is being run as a cafe and functions venue called M Club in the interim.
A spokeswoman for Catholic Healthcare said management preferred not to comment while the court hearing was under way.
