Best mates Thomas Giles and Lachlan Gale will switch their Marcellin College Randwick jerseys for green and gold jumpers next month, when they run out for the Australian Schoolboys rugby league team.
The pair has been selected in the Australian Schoolboys team — which has featured the likes of NRL stars Greg Inglis and Brad Fittler in past years — to play against a New Zealand representative side in a one-off match at Queensland on September 29.
“It is a dream come true,” Lachlan, 17, said.
“Pulling on the Australian jersey is the highest achievement you can reach at this level and to run out with your best mate, it is all you can ask for.”
The pair both play in the front row and earned selection in the national side after starring for the NSW Combined Catholic Colleges team at a national tournament in July, featuring the best schoolboy players from across the country.
After the tournament, the Australian team was named, marking a special moment for the two good friends.
“I got called up first and my family went crazy in the crowd and then Tom was straight after me, so it was pretty special,” Lachlan said.
“It was just a feeling of relief and pride and happiness and shock.”
Lachlan also plays for the South Sydney Rabbitohs under-20s side, while Thomas, 18, trains with the Cronulla Sharks under-20s.
They are both in Year 12 and preparing for HSC exams.
Lachlan, from Mascot, said his goal was to play in the NRL one day and to continue working hard and progressing through the Rabbitohs set up.
