Fresh design plans for the South Sydney Rabbitohs’ new home in Maroubra have been revealed as Randwick Council moves a step closer to lodging a development application for the state-of-the-art facility.
Randwick Council will meet on Tuesday and decide whether to endorse the latest plans for the $58 million project, effectively giving the green light for a much-anticipated development application to be lodged next month.
The project will see the club move its base from Redfern to Heffron Park in Maroubra.
The facility will not only provide a high-performance centre for the Rabbitohs, under a long-term lease, but will also provide a range of new facilities for the community.
Completion and opening of the huge facility – known as the Heffron Centre – is estimated during the second half of 2022 on the southwest part of Heffron Park.
Under current plans, the Hefron Centre will include a $25.7 million high-performance centre for the Rabbitohs which will boast meeting rooms, a lecture theatre, a gym, aquatic facilities, and even a high-altitude chamber.
A $6.3 million high-performance field will also be built.
Community facilities worth a further $25.7 million will also be included in the Heffron Centre such as a new gymnastics centre and two indoor sports halls suitable for netball, basketball, badminton, volleyball and futsal.
Demolition of existing buildings including the dated gymnastics hall, indoor sports facility and old tennis courts will also be carried out.
Funding for the Rabbitohs’ centre of excellence includes $10 million from the Federal Government, about $8.7 million from the State Government, $4 million from the Rabbitohs, and about $3 million from council.
The council will fund the bulk of the rest of the project for the new gymnastics centre, multipurpose indoor sporting facilities and high-performance field.
The latest design plans will assist council during their next meeting on Tuesday, and further design plans will be included in the development application which will go on public exhibition.
Council papers stated the development application for the project would likely be lodged next month.
“The program is currently on track with completion anticipated in August 2022,” council papers read.
“The project is on budget, with all funding sources identified and approved.”
