Revealed: Southeast Sydney childcare centres rated best and worst

Early learning centre Tigger’s Honeypot based at the University of NSW has been rated as the best childcare service in southeast Sydney, according to the authority which rates each centre across Australia.
The Southern Courier has compiled a list of the best and worst childcare services across the region which can be seen below.
The Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority rates each childcare service across the country. In its latest snapshot report, providing data up to June 2019, it revealed just 16 centres had the highest rating of “excellent” out of 5812 centres in NSW.
That included Tigger’s Honeypot in Randwick which was the only centre across the region to receive an “excellent” rating.
Meanwhile, the only childcare service in southeast Sydney to receive the worst rating of “significant improvement required” is Squiggler Academy Kensington based on Todman Ave.
Tigger’s Honeypot director Sylvia Turner said being part of the university meant there was plenty of support to complete professional development for educators and the centre was always striving to excel, in step with the rest of the university.
“It makes for an environment where we are always trying to grow and we have a group of reflective practitioners who question what we are doing and how we can improve.”
The centre is one of four early learning centres on campus which are all rated “exceeding” national quality standards or higher.
Ms Turner explained the centre was given the option of taking part in a rigorous process to receive the highest rating of “excellent” after initially being rated “exceeding”.
She said they accepted and the process was like putting together a thesis explaining in great detail why the centre deserved the highest rating, which it received last year.
Ms Turner, who has worked at the centre for 17 years, said on top of having robust conversations regularly with parents — many of whom were academics and were deeply engaged with the centre — the staff also brought unique skills to the centre which helped it thrive.
“We have a really diverse range of skills within the team and we bring those to our education program … and it is just a really beautiful community.”
Tigger’s Honeypot caters for about 70 students per day and 100 families. The centre was also named as the NSW Early Childhood Service of the Year at the 2018 Australian Early Education and Care Awards.
Of the 114 centres across southeast Sydney, one was rated “excellent”, 28 were “exceeding” national quality standards, 48 were “meeting” national quality standards, 35 were “working toward” national quality standards, and just one was rated “significant improvement required”.
