WHILE all the talk has been about David Warner there is more to Randwick Petersham this season than the former Australia vice-captain.

The Randy Petes start their season against St George on Saturday with club president Mike Whitney setting his sights on winning the two-day Belvidere Cup for the first time

“We’ve got a really good mix,” the former test bowler said. “Our best side on the paddock in first grade is going to be a really competitive. If everyone is fit and firing then watch out.”

Wicketkeeper Anthony Sams will captain the side again.

However Sams will forgo the duties behind the stumps for a number of games to blood in promising youngster Matt Everett.

The Randy Petes have two of the hottest young talents in Sydney cricket with batsman Jason Sangha and spinner Mac Jenkins.

Sangha was recently picked for NSW in the JLT Cup (along with Dan Sams) while Mac Jenkins has captained the Australian under 17 side.

Jenkins was also nominated for the News Local Local Sports Star awards earlier this year. “They are both great players with bright futures ahead of them,” Whitney said. “Sangha could have easily captained the side and Mac is one to watch.”

The club continues its links with Cricket Ireland by bringing over under 19 captain Harry Tector.

The 18-year-old bowls right arm off break and is handy with the bat as well.

Sam Boyns returns from England having played for the Randy Petes two years ago.

Two new recruits who will be hoping to make their mark are Jason Ralston and Dylan Hunter.

Ralston knows all about performing in big games having played in New Zealand in last year’s under 19s World Cup.

Hunter, who hails from Newcastle, arrives at Coogee Oval with a bowling average of 20.44.

As previously reported Warner has committed for at least five matches.

“The first grade is looking really good,” Whitney said. “And that’s important really important because it filters down and creates an environment of aspiration.

“We’ve never won the Belvidere Cup, so that’s a target.

“As president the Club Championships (which takes into account the overall strength of the club) is also very important.”

He also revealed the club has come up with a new slogan: one per cent.

“If everyone contributes one per cent more to the club whether that is in your training, attitude, bringing a sponsor in, turning up at all the club function or just supporting, that the will lift our club up.”
