A Sydney Greens councillor has slammed “irresponsible reporting” which she claims “triggered” her receiving a barrage of death threats and vile abuse after a photo emerged of her wearing a Palestinian keffiyeh while laying flowers at an Anzac Day Dawn Service.
Randwick Greens councillor Rafaela Pandolfini told The Daily Telegraph some of her fellow councillors had “complained” to the media and saw the Daily Mail publish an article which “triggered this barrage of abuse from men”.
Ms Pandolfini was pictured wearing the traditional Arab scarf at the Coogee Dawn Service on Thursday and said it was the “most peaceful, small gesture” she could make in solidarity with the “violent murder of over 30,000 Palestinians” and that she attends the service to show respect to her grandfather who served in WWII.
“This scarf has a flower that looks just like a poppy … so [that’s why] I chose to wear it to the service,” she said.
Ms Pandolfini has since taken to Instagram to reveal the abuse she has received with an unknown man leaving a voicemail saying, “you’re that f**king b***h on TV that wore that scarf didn’t you”.
“You stupid disgusting b***h you should go f**k yourself,” the man said.
“I hope they choke you in your scarf.”
Another man emailed Ms Pandolfini calling her a “grub” who wore “that Mussie Crap on our nations remembrance Day”.
“Our diggers wud (sic) turn in their graves,” the man said.
He then said to “bring back public lynchings”.
Ms Pandolfini acknowledged these men were “very sad people to [be spending] their time abusing a woman”.
“Of course we all have differences of opinion and some people have emailed me in support and a very small handful have emailed legible sentiments of disappointment,” she said.
“That doesn’t mean they get to dictate what someone can and can’t wear.”
A further man wished for Ms Pandolfini to “hopefully… die in agony you f**king dog”.
She was then accused by another man of making herself “stand out amongst our Anzacs” and again told to “throw yourself in front of a bus, you disrespectful piece of s**t”.
“If you feel so deeply about the dirty f**king sand n*****s , why not f**k off over to the land of losers and walk the walk?,” a further email read.
Ms Pandolfini said she wasn’t “going to lie” and said it wasn’t affecting her before telling The Daily Telegraph she had reported the abuse to NSW Police and the AFP.
“I am worried about my safety … but I am an extremely privileged person and I know that a lot of people are on the receiving end of this kind of vitriol in a much more extreme manner,” she said.
“This is considered to be okay in this country and we wonder why a woman is killed every four days.
“Violence is often the very last form of abuse carried out.
“Hatred and abuse towards women is an ideology and should be treated seriously or the epidemic in Australia will only continue to get worse.”
