SWITCHING to an electric car is about to become a lot more practical if you live in the eastern suburbs.

Randwick Council has moved to become the first council in NSW to install public electric car-charging stations.

The project is part of Randwick’s 3-Council Regional Environment Program, a collaboration with Waverley and Woollahra to install eight stations across the three areas.

Randwick has identified four sites to install the stations: Coogee’s Brook St, Randwick’s Silver St, Randwick Community Centre and Maroubra’s Des Renford Leisure Centre.

Council sustainability manager Peter Maganov recommendations were approved by councillors this week.

“Detailed analysis has been undertaken over the past two years to ensure this new and innovative technology solution provides an important service to residents across the eastern suburbs as communities and governments transition to a low carbon future,” he said.

“This initiative will continue to demonstrate the sustainability leadership of local government, particularly Randwick.”

Each unit will cost about $15,000 and the project will go to public tender.

The cost of two are covered in the 3-Council Regional Environment Program budget and another two would be funded from Randwick’s environmental levy program.
