AS THE Kovai family look to the future, they know it’s going to be a bright, sun-drenched one.
As of January 26, Vilas, his wife Mangalagouri and sons Soham, 11, and Mohnish, 14, will be Australian citizens.
“It’s a new chapter and certainly it comes with responsibility and a lot of changes,” Mr Kovai said.
“It also happens to be Republic Day in India so it’s quite sentimental.”
After six years in Australia, the research and evaluation manager for NSW Health said he and his wife chose to stay for the benefit of their children’s education.
“They don’t know much about the implication of citizenship but perhaps when they reach higher education they’ll know the benefits.
“A number of my family members came here for education, to look for good prospects and employment.
“Also, the health system in Australia is one of the best in the world.
“In all these dimensions Australia is doing fantastic.”
He also stressed the importance of his kids having access to a healthy, active lifestyle, including learning how to swim and enjoy the country’s coastline. “We now go to the beaches regularly, especially Coogee.”
