A council garbage truck worker remains in a serious condition in hospital after he was struck by a car and pinned against the back of a waste truck in Sydney’s southeast at the weekend.
Emergency crews were called to Anzac Parade in Maroubra on Sunday after a 23-year-man driving a Kia sedan allegedly careered into the path of a parked garbage truck just after 5am.
Police said the impact caused a council worker who was collecting bins at the back of the truck to be “pinned” between the vehicle and the front of the sedan.
The 57-year-old male Randwick Council employee was treated by paramedics for serious leg, lower abdominal and pelvic injuries.
He was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital in a critical condition and remained in intensive care as of 5pm on Monday in a serious but stable condition.
Eastern Beaches police allege the driver of the car, Brazilian man Danilo Estadella Tissoni, “failed to notice” the parked truck before crashing into it.
The 23-year-old, who lives in Bondi Junction, was charged with dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm, unlicensed driving, negligent driving, and special range drink driving (blood alcohol reading between .02 and .05).
Mr Tissoni did not enter a plea or make an application for bail when he appeared via audio visual link in Waverley Local Court on Monday.
In a statement, Randwick Council general manager Therese Manns said the council was assisting police with the investigation.
“The thoughts and prayers of the Randwick City Council and extended community are with our employee during this difficult time,” Ms Manns said.
“Our focus is on his health and well-being and we’re offering him and his family all the support we can.”
