A UNIQUE piece of Rabbitohs history is going under the hammer.
The Souths jersey, signed by the team that beat the Dragons 16-10 in the 1971 grand final, will be auctioned on October 13 at Bombala Golf Club to raise money for the Men Of League charity.
Tom Herbert, from the Southern Monaro Men of League, bumped into Souths legend Ron Coote and asked if he would sign the jersey.
When Coote returned it with the signatures of George Piggins and Bob McCarthy as well, he had an idea.
“I showed it to the boys in the pub and one of them said, ‘Why don’t you try and get the rest of them?’ ”
It has taken Mr Herbert 12 months and the shirt has travelled across NSW but he got the signatures of Eric Simms, Paul Sait, Ray Branighan, John Sattler, Gary Stevens, Keith Edwards and Bob Honan. Only three names are missing: John O’Neill (died in 1999), Denis Pittard (in jail in South Africa) and Bob Grant (in poor health).
“I don’t think there will be anything else like it,” Mr Herbert said. “I’ve spoken to a few people and they think it will get $5000 to $10,000.”
