Queens Park: Helicopter near Darley Rd as child hit by car on Avoca Street

There were dramatic scenes at Queens Park in Sydney’s east this morning after a young girl was hit by a vehicle before a rescue helicopter attended the nearby scene, landing on a field packed full of children taking part in weekend sport.

A young girl has been rushed to hospital after she was struck by a car near Queens Park, in Sydney’s east.

At 9.30am this morning NSW Ambulance crews were called to the intersection of Avoca St and Darley Rd before they then transported a girl - aged nine - to Sydney Children’s Hospital.

A NSW Ambulance spokesman said the girl was taken to hospital in a serious condition with a head injury.

Along with police and three ambulance vehicles in attendance, a Toll Ambulance Rescue Helicopter was also dispatched.

In dramatic scenes, it landed nearby on fields at Queens Park, while hundreds of children were taking part in weekend sport.

The helicopter was not used to transport the child.

Queens Park resident Hanim Kilic didn’t witness the child being struck, but said the scene was “traumatic” in the aftermath of the collision.

“There were lots of people hugging and comforting each other.”

She said the child appeared to be conscious before being taken to hospital.

Resident Sam Bellanto said “there were lots of passers-by trying to take control of the street” following the collision, before emergency services arrived soon after.
