One of the biggest projects in Sydney – the $1.4 billion redevelopment of two hospitals in Randwick – is on track to be completed by 2025.
Prince of Wales Hospital and neighbouring Sydney Children’s Hospital are each receiving a state-of-the-art building as part of the project.
A third building, on the same development site opposite the two hospitals, has also been proposed which will be used for research and education.
Prince of Wales Hospital’s $778 million Integrated Acute Services Building is the first of the three buildings to be erected, and construction is well underway on the 13-storey facility.
“The Integrated Acute Services Building will reach its full height in early 2021, with each level to be enclosed with exterior panelling and internal fit-out to continue throughout 2021 and 2022,” a NSW Health Infrastructure spokeswoman said.
“The Integrated Acute Services Building is expected to be completed and opened in late 2022.”
The building is being funded by the State Government and will include everything from a new emergency department and ICU to operating theatres and inpatient units.
A proposed $608 million building for Sydney Children’s Hospital, which will feature an Australian-first children’s cancer centre, remains in the planning stages but is estimated for completion in 2025.
“Subject to planning approval main works are expected to commence on (that building) in mid-2022,” the spokeswoman said. “The building is due to be open to patients in 2025.”
Funding for that building will largely come from the State and Federal Government but also UNSW, Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation and the Children’s Cancer Institute.
Meanwhile, The University of NSW has invested $250 million for a third building on the site which will be used for research and education.
That building will be known as the UNSW Health Translation Hub. There is no estimated completion date for that building.
“Planning is underway for the UNSW Health Translation Hub to develop the environmental impact statement that will be on public exhibition in the first half of 2021.”
UNSW is located a stone’s throw away from the development site.
