A Correctional officer is fighting for his life after a fight broke out with a prisoner inside Prince of Wales Hospital.
The officer, from Long Bay Correctional Complex, was allegedly assaulted alongside a Prince of Wales Hospital nurse around 8.30am on February 24.
A Corrective Services NSW spokeswoman told NewsLocal the “serious assault” resulted in the officer undergoing emergency surgery.
“His status at 11.00am was critical but stable,” she said.
NewsLocal understands the inmate was transferred from Long Bay Correctional Complex to Prince of Wales Hospital for a medical assessment.
Corrections Minister, Geoff Lee said the assault was a “terrible event”.
“On behalf of the government, I extend my sympathy to the officer and the nurse,” he said.
The inmate has been transferred to the High Risk Management Correctional Centre inside Goulburn Supermax, where he will be forced into seven days isolation.
Corrections Commissioner Kevin Corcoran said officers undertake “dangerous” work.
“Despite this, they turn up each day determined to keep the community safe,” he said.
“CSNSW is offering all available support to the officer and other staff.”
The Corrections spokeswoman said the commissioner, alongside Assistant Commissioner Custodial Anne-Marie Martin, visited Prince of Wales Hospital on Thursday morning to “inspect the scene of the assault and speak with the medical director”.
They are expected to meet with staff at the Long Bay Correctional Complex.
The assault comes just days after NewsLocal revealed a female correctional officer at a Hunter Valley facility was allegedly taken hostage and threatened with rape by an inmate.
