Patrick Hanly: Maroubra wellness guide accused of magic mushroom supply

A major twist has unfolded in the case of a self-described ‘agent of the cultural evolution’ accused of dealing hallucinogenic drugs.

A self-described ‘agent of the cultural evolution’ accused of supplying a commercial quantity of magic mushrooms has had a small win in court, with half of his criminal charges dropped.

Patrick Samuel Hanly was arrested at a Maroubra home last July in sweeping raids by Strike Force Caladenia at 11 locations as part of a drug supply investigation.

The 33-year-old was charged with manufacturing a large commercial quantity of a prohibited drug, however the charge was dropped at Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday.

Hanly remains accused of two counts of drug supply which allegedly took place at Maroubra on the morning of July 29 last year. The illegal drugs allegedly at the centre of the transactions were 181g of psilocybin, also known as magic mushrooms, and mescaline.

A biography of Hanly on social media outlined his involvement in a wellness workshop and stated he was “a wilderness guide” who was “inspired by the way of our ancestors”

Magistrate Clare Farnan adjourned for negotiations involving Hanly, his legal team and the Director of Public Prosecutions to take place.

The matter will return to court next month.
