A multimillion-dollar upgrade to one of Sydney’s busiest train stations will make commuters’ journeys smoother and easier while reducing congestion, the state government claims.

The Daily Telegraph has been given exclusive access to the new Mascot Station entrance set to open this week, which will give commuters access from both sides of Bourke St.

More than 1000 workers have built four new escalators, a lift, bathrooms, additional ticket gates and hearing loops.

Transport Minister Jo Haylen and Heffron MP Ron Hoenig joined Transport for NSW (TfNSW) to inspect the new development ahead of its unveiling.

It comes after TfNSW worked alongside Bayside Council to consult the public with local businesses and residents over the design for Sydney’s 35th busiest train station.

Commuters positioned on the western side of Bourke St would ordinarily use nearby pedestrian crossings to access Mascot Station’s only entrance, but the new underpass was described by Mr Hoenig as a “necessary upgrade” that will free up traffic congestion for road users.

According to TfNSW, the improvements will allow for greater capacity at what they called “the busiest station on the Airport line”, as well as make travel to the city faster and more comfortable.

A spokeswoman for the agency said the station sees “between 600,000 to 800,000 taps on and off” each month.

“Until now, everyone had to cram into the same set of escalators and through the same entry,” Mr Hoenig said.

The new entrance is also complimented by a surrounding plaza which includes seating and landscaping, which Ms Haylen said would “be a great little public space in the heart of Mascot”.

Minor works will continue at the station until early 2024.
