- Cycleway given tick of approval, but it’s not over yet
A new shared cycleway and pedestrian link is being proposed to link Tempe and Mascot around Sydney Airport, it has been revealed.
The path would run along to the north west of Alexandra Canal, replacing an existing route on the airport side of the waterway.
It is part of the State Government’s $2.2 billion Sydney Gateway project, which will connect Port Botany and Sydney Airport to WestConnex via the so-called spaghetti junction at Sydenham.
The 1.5km track would start at the north end of Airport Dr, from the existing Mascot cycleway, before crossing Alexandra Canal at North Precinct Rd.
It would then run along the embankment before crossing the waterway again at the pedestrian bridge, where it would reconnect to the current cycleway network.
Transport and Roads Minister Andrew Constance said community feedback had been instrumental in refining the project.
“The new proposed active transport route is a clear demonstration that community input leads to better outcomes,” he said.
“We encourage people to continue to provide feedback by lodging a submission to the concept design. This will further refine the project ahead of the Environmental Impact Submission, which will provide more detail and another opportunity for input.”
Further details of the project including designs are expected to be revealed on Monday. It will include information about the management of Tempe Tip.
Two temporary cycle tracks will be installed during the construction phase to ensure pedestrian and cyclist access at the end of 2020, when work on Sydney Gateway is scheduled to begin.
