The woman charged with the murder of an elderly grandfather in Sydney’s eastern suburbs allegedly stole bank cards from the victim before his body was discovered, court documents have revealed.
South Coogee grandfather and retired solicitor Peter McCarthy, 77, was found dead inside his Elphinstone Rd unit late last year.
Police allege Mr McCarthy died from severe head and facial injuries sometime between December 17 and December 20.
One of his neighbours Narelle Fiona Smith, 46, was arrested a few weeks following the grisly discovery and was charged with murder and dishonestly obtain financial advantage by deception.
The latter offence allegedly related to her using a stolen Opal card, registered in Mr McCarthy’s name, for two bus trips on the same day his body was discovered on December 20.
She has since been charged with two further offences of larceny and receive stolen property.
Police allege in court documents the fresh charges relate to Smith stealing three bank cards plus the Opal card from Mr McCarthy on December 17. She then allegedly disposed of the bank cards.
Police will allege in court Smith was known to Mr McCarthy.
Smith remains in custody on remand and her matter was briefly mentioned in Waverley Local Court on Tuesday.
Smith’s lawyer requested an adjournment and told the court the brief of evidence was still being compiled by police.
“The brief is not yet complete which is not surprising given the nature of the matter,” her lawyer said.
Magistrate Carolyn Huntsman adjourned the matter until next week for a decision to be made on subpoena material requested by police, which relates to Smith’s medical and mental health records.
No pleas have been entered to the four charges.
Police have also charged another man Nigel Gay Fleming, 44, with fraud offences allegedly related to his going on a spending spree with bank cards under the name of Mr McCarthy.
Police do not allege Fleming had any involvement in the killing of McCarthy.
