An alleged Hells Angels bikie who has been charged after an eastern suburbs unit block was shot up with a high-powered firearm will seek to have his home detention altered so he can work in the construction industry.

On May 27, police raced to a unit block on Gregory St in South Coogee following reports of a public place shooting.

Eastern Beaches Police Area Command officers ultimately charged two alleged Hells Angels bikie gang members after investigations revealed seven shots were fired into a unit from a high-powered firearm.

No injuries were reported as a result of the shocking incident.

Meyez Elkerdi, 31, was arrested at a home on Wauchope Cres, South Coogee and charged with firing a firearm at a dwelling place with a disregard for public safety.

He was granted bail shortly after the incident with home detention-style conditions which prevent him from leaving the house at all except to report for bail and attend court or legal appointments.

But his defence solicitor Sophie Toomey appeared at Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday seeking a variation that would allow the alleged bikie to work.

“What his employer said is that he would need to work from 5am to 7pm at sites in Sydney and the Newcastle area, and I have said we are certain the court would not be happy with that,” Ms Toomey told Magistrate Susan Horan.

“His employer would be happy for him to work 7am to 5pm in the Sydney metropolitan area, and the court might be minded to grant that variation.”

Ms Toomey acknowledged the allegations against Elkerdi were “very serious”.

“Mr Elkerdi has been compliant to the absolute letter with the most stringent bail conditions for more than three months,” Ms Toomey told the court.

“He needs to earn a living and this is an opportunity for him to do so – we’re asking the court to grant him that opportunity.”

However, the application did not proceed after a solicitor for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions said they were not adequately prepared to address the application as the officer in charge of the matter is currently working night shifts.

Ms Horan also indicated she would have had difficulty with the letter provided from Elkerdi’s intended employer as it was not digitally signed.

The court adjourned Elkerdi’s application for one week where he will advance his request to be able to work.

Detectives investigating the shooting under Strike Force Auberson also arrested fellow alleged Hells Angels bikie James Scicluna, 41, in relation to the incident.

Scicluna was arrested at a home on Farnsworth Ave in Campbelltown on June 2, and a raid allegedly uncovered a semiautomatic high-powered rifle fitted with a scope and a quantity of drugs.

He was subsequently charged with firing a firearm at a dwelling house with a disregard for safety and not disclosing the identity of a driver or passenger as the owner of a vehicle.

His matter remains before the court.
