Matthew Francis: Maroubra man remains behind bars for alleged knife attack

A man accused of stabbing another man with a boning knife near a busy main road in Maroubra before motorists rushed to his aid will remain behind bars after being refused bail in court.

Matthew Barry Francis, 37, from Maroubra, allegedly stabbed Louis Vercher, 26, near the intersection of Anzac Parade and Beauchamp Rd during the afternoon of Sunday, September 13, police will allege.

Motorists reportedly rushed from their cars to try and help Vercher after he collapsed on Anzac Parade.

Police will allege in court Francis then assaulted Sarah Flegg, 46, at a nearby unit.

Police allege in court documents that Francis was in a domestic relationship with Flegg and he stole $400 cash and a mobile phone from her that afternoon.

Court documents also revealed Francis was allegedly armed with a 15cm boning knife during the incident.

Vercher and Flegg were taken to hospital after the attack and police will allege Vercher suffered stab wounds to his chest. Despite his serious injuries, he was released from hospital just days later.

Meanwhile, Francis was arrested on Sydney’s northern beaches two days after the incident and was charged with a string of offences.

Francis’ matter was mentioned in Waverley Local Court on Tuesday where his legal aid lawyer withdrew a bail application.

He did not appear on audio visual link and Magistrate Ross Hudson adjourned the matter until November and refused his bail.

He has been charged with armed with intent to commit indictable offence, wound person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, wound person intend to cause grievous bodily harm (DV), and larceny.

He has not entered any pleas on the charges.

Vercher was reportedly helped by two off-duty paramedics until emergency services arrived.

Flegg also suffered injuries in the incident including a head injury and bruising. An AVO has been applied for on behalf of Flegg, against Francis, and that application has been adjourned until November.
