Matraville shop tops poll for southeast’s best burger
The Southern Courier asked its readers to vote for their best-loved burger place in the southeast, and Big Bunz in Matraville won by a landslide.
We asked our readers to vote for their favourite burger place in the southeast, and Big Bunz in Matraville was the hands-down winner claiming 58 per cent of the vote.
Co-owner Melina Michalopoulos, who runs the small business with her husband Frank said the win felt “amazing”.
“It’s so nice to get that kind of recognition. Hard work pays off,” Mrs Michalopoulos said.
The husband and wife duo opened Big Bunz in November of 2015, fulfilling Frank’s dream of running his own burger place.

“It’s really my husband behind Big Bunz … his whole life he’s been in hospitality and wanted to own his own burger shop. In all of his previous jobs he made burgers and customers loved them. So he wanted to create a new burger concept,” Mrs Michalopoulos said.
The Big Bunz philosophy is real food that's made from scratch, highlighted by their most popular burgers.
“I’d say our top three burgers would be the Big Bunz burger which is our signature, the Southern Fried Ranch which is a southern-style fried chicken burger, and also a newer one, the Frankie’z Special which is a spicy beef burger,” Mrs Michalopoulos said.
Mrs Michalopoulos, who also grew up in the area, said the people are what she enjoys most about running Big Bunz.
“We’ve got the best customers around this area. It makes it easer to come to work every day,” she said.
Big Bunz is located at 1207 Anzac Parade, Matraville, and is open from 10.30am to 8.30pm from Wednesday to Sunday.
