A 700 metre long set of Indigenous artworks could soon adorn a row of warehouses opposite Sydney Airport in what has been pitched as a visually engaging “Welcome to Sydney”.
Multinational property and logistics company LOGOS has put forward a warehouse proposal, valued at $88 million, for a 16,600 sqm site at 350 King St, Mascot. The site is bordered by Qantas Dr to the west, beyond which lies Sydney Airport and the Qantas jet base.
LOGOS also owns neighbouring blocks along Qantas Dr, including 297 King St which is also slated for development with the company proposing a $106.5 million warehouse and distribution facility.
In plans lodged with the NSW planning panel, LOGOS propose to “draw on the relationship” between these sites and “enhance the front to Qantas Dr” by delivering “integrated artworks”.
These artworks would span 700 metres and stretch between four warehouse sites which face Sydney Airport, including the one currently proposed for 350 King St.
“The result will be a large-scale, visually engaging ‘Welcome to Sydney’ that provides a unique opportunity for local Aboriginal artists to interpret the continuing connection of Aboriginal people to Country,” plans state.
If approved, the warehouse at 350 King St would be five-storeys — 44 metres — in height. On the site of the warehouse and distribution centre, there would also be office premises and over 300 carparking spaces.
Construction would begin at the end of this year and take approximately 18 months. The warehouse would run 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
