Police established a crime scene – including by setting up a tent alongside the busy road – and are continuing their investigation.

A woman was also found at a nearby apartment building and was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

“Police have been told the man was involved in an argument with another man in the street prior to the stabbing,” NSW Police said in a statement.

Tony Filetti lives near the scene and told The Daily Telegraph he witnessed the man stumble into the road. He said the incident was “pretty freaky”.

“He was in a pretty bad way ... he was struggling for his life,” Mr Filetti said.

“He was a young man, he was asking for help,” he said.

Mr Filetti said he saw a few people run out of their cars to help the man.
