Coogee singer-songwriter Lucy Burke will release her new single “Calm Before the Storm” today.
The mum of two, who teaches at Kesser Torah College, Rosebay, will premiere her latest video clip with a single launch at The Vanguard in Newtown on Sunday.
Burke, who borrows inspiration from “The Beatles to Lana Del Rey and everything in between”, tell us about her new single, singing and being a mum:
1. The inspiration for the new single … This song actually started as a melody riff. I kept hearing a musical line in my head that I sang over and over again. It made me think of rolling seas and stormy clouds. Slowly, the song began to be about capturing a feeling. A feeling of being a bit lost and helpless but learning to embrace the unknown and confront one’s fears. The song is about self-reliance and reassurance. Telling yourself that everything will be OK and to have faith in yourself. It came at a time when I was a little lost in my musical career. I was not really sure of where I was heading and what the next step should be. It was about embracing the unknown, taking a leap of faith, trying something new and trusting in your decisions. As a songwriter and English teacher, I particularly love storytelling, and especially music that tells a story. That’s why I have always loved soundtrack music, as it is used to tell stories. So this song is about a journey of self discovery and learning to have faith in yourself.
2. You’re known for: For being a singer, a songwriter, a mum, a wife, an English teacher, a book club lover, a storyteller, a lover of Shakespeare, a lover of capturing moments — both in music and in life.
3. To you singing is: Self expression. Singing is the best when the music is free to go where it needs to go. If it is too restrained it looses the magic. Singing captures moments, it expresses feelings that can’t be explained in words.
4. The best thing about being a mum is: Everything! Apart from the sleepless nights. My upcoming single following “Calm Before the Storm” is called “Night-time is a Lonely Hour”, which is an honest reflection on the loneliness you can feel in the middle of the night with a crying baby. But when they give you that smile it makes it all worth it.
