FRESH from scaling Mount Matterhorn’s deadly summit, former federal Liberal MP Pat Farmer now faces a bigger uphill battle — prying the state seat of Maroubra off Labor in the March elections.
The ultra-marathon runner and Maroubra local, who achieved a lifelong goal to climb Switzerland’s Matterhorn on Saturday, has nominated to be the Liberal candidate for Maroubra.
The party is expected to endorse his candidacy.
While Maroubra has always been a safe Labor seat, Mr Farmer has made a career out of taking on the impossible.
Mr Farmer was the first man to run from the North Pole to the South Pole through the Americas in 2012, and most recently covered the length of India.
Mr Farmer said he hopes his personal goals set a positive example. “I’ve visited many schools throughout Australia and recently spoke to the students at South Sydney High to encourage them to achieve their dreams. I’d like to think that today (on the climb) goes one step closer to showing them again that it can be done.”

Mr Farmer will be challenging Labor incumbent Michael Daley, who won in 2015 with 52.4 per cent of the vote. The 2015 Liberal candidate, Randwick councillor Brendan Roberts, said: “Pat is a local bloke who has run a thousands of miles for charity, he’ll run millions of miles more for us here in Maroubra, making sure we finally get our fair share.”
