Mascot residents have been told to be on their guard against letterbox thieves following a spike in thefts.
There were reports of fraud as a result of letterbox theft nearly every three days in Mascot in the three months before Christmas.
Police said population growth as well as the continuous movement of people around the station were behind the increase in crime.
“It’s one of those crime trends but there are a lot of things people can do to keep safe,” a Botany police spokesman said.
“It is usually when post builds up over long periods so it is important to stay on top of it.”
Other advice includes installing a lockable letterbox and asking to collect financial mail from your bank rather than having it delivered.
Recent statistics show Mascot is experiencing particularly high levels of crime compared to neighbouring suburbs.
As well as the 25 reports of fraud by letterbox theft, there were 22 assaults, five robberies, 11 cases of breaking and entering, 14 incidents of stealing from motor vehicles and more than 50 other incidents of stealing.
However, police said crime on the whole was down across the Botany Local Area Command on the previous three-month period.
Botany police’s Community Safety Precinct meeting will be at Mascot Police Station, 965 Botany Rd, on March 21 from 10am. All are welcome to attend.
