IT is not uncommon to spot whales off the coast of Sydney around this time of the year. Humpbacks head north in their thousands to the breeding grounds around the equator.
However, a Go Whale Watching boat was greeted by a whale of a different kind this week — the mighty killer whale.
A pod of 50 to 60 of the orcas approached the boat which was around six nautical miles off Maroubra on Wednesday.
And despite their fearsome reputation, they were nothing but friendly.
“They came up to the boats and were interacting with us,” Go Whale Watching’s Simon Miller said.
“They were very inquisitive. They would have stayed with us longer but we had to go back.
“You don’t normally see them this far north, it’s rare for them to be around here.”
The killer whales are among the world’s most powerful predators and were probably in the area to hunt the migrating humpbacks.
They target the calves and are also known to hunt great white sharks, seals.
