A member of the Bra Boys surf gang has been refused bail after allegedly shattering an elderly man’s hip during a “heartless” bashing at a petrol station in southeast Sydney.

Jed Campbell, 44, from Daceyville, allegedly attacked a 74-year-old man with dementia at Shell Coles Express service station in Kingsford on Monday morning leaving him motionless on the ground and suffering serious injuries.

Police allege a dispute between the pair led to the attack about 10am.

The incident was caught on CCTV which was played in Waverley Local Court on Tuesday (June 15) where Campbell made an application to be released on bail.

In the footage, Campbell can be seen allegedly walking into the service station and within seconds fly kicking an elderly man in the chest, sending him stumbling backwards into a freezer and landing heavily on the floor.

The alleged offender can be seen wearing a jumper with the words My Brother’s Keeper while standing over the alleged victim as he remains defenceless on the floor.

Campbell is then seen to allegedly kick and punch the victim and drag the elderly man about 15m across the floor and out of the store by his ankle, before continuing to shout at him and kick him.

The ordeal lasted over a minute.

The court heard the victim, Raymond Wheatley, suffered a broken hip and facial injuries in the alleged sickening ordeal.

“The complainant may never walk again and will suffer significant difficulties in his recovery,” prosecutor Daniel Richardson said.

Prosecutor Richardson said the alleged attack involved “significant and substantial violence” on a vulnerable member of the community and there was an unacceptable risk to the community if he was released on bail.

Campbell’s lawyer submitted his client was the breadwinner in his family, which included his wife and two children, and they would suffer if he was refused bail.

He also said while his client had a lengthy criminal record he had not been before the courts for the past four years and he had been clean from drugs and alcohol for over a decade.

Judge Carolyn Huntsman refused bail stating there was an unacceptable risk to the community following the “vicious” and “prolonged” incident.

“(This is a) sustained and heartless attack on an elderly member of our community which included his being dragged along the floor after being kicked and hit on the ground.”

She acknowledged early indications from hospital were that the elderly man had “shattered” his hip bone.

Campbell ran his hands through his hair and folded his arms after hearing the decision to refuse his bail.

Campbell, who works in maintenance and is a qualified tiler, has been charged with reckless grievous bodily harm. He has not entered a plea.

His matter has been adjourned until September.
