ICONIC live music venue The Roundhouse has reopened its doors after an almost two-year closure and a $33 million refurbishment.
The works carried out on the 2200 capacity venue will deliver a world-class live music experience, as well as a space for a multitude of other events. The University of NSW’s premier music venue has hosted some of the world’s most popular acts, including INXS, The Foo Fighters and Fatboy Slim.
UNSW student organisation ARC chief executive Brad Hannagan said it was the venue’s first refurbishment since it was built in 1960.
“The Roundhouse has this kind of unique position in the gig industry of NSW ... It’s as popular with the general public as it is with students,” Mr Hannagan said. “We wanted to embark on a major refurbishment ... to modernise it and bring it back to being the hub of student life on the campus.”
Integral to the renovation was the acoustic treatment, which promises brilliant sound, while minimising external noise.
As well as music gigs, the venue now caters for weddings, corporate events and conferences. “We always had the idea of being able to address multiple markets with the same facility when designing the refurbishment.”
Christening the rejuvenate Roundhouse will be Australian indie pop sensations San Cisco, with a special one-off Sydney performance at the launch on Thursday night.
