A humble brick home in Randwick could become a place for learning with plans underway to expand a nearby school.

A development application (DA) has been lodged by the Anglican Schools Corporation to convert 12 Heath St Randwick into two “flexible learning spaces” for nearby Claremont College, which is estimated to cost $1.15m.

The proposal states that the house would be used “as part of the existing school accommodating 40 children aged 4-6, 6 staff”.

Currently, Claremont College’s capacity is 420 students, ranging from kindergarten to Year 6 with 50 full-time and part-time staff employed.

The proposed site sits directly across the road from the school, with the DA stressing that the plans were not an attempt to increase student numbers, but “a reorganisation of students within the school”.

“Some older students presently using the existing facilities north of Judge Lane being moved to the main campus and the existing and proposed facilities north of Judge Lane catering for the younger 4-6 year old cohort,” the proposal states.

“The proposal is considered to be highly suitable to this location and will be integrated into the overall school operations. It utilises an existing building is designed to minimise impact on neighbours.

“We believe the development provides a quality planning outcome for the site and seek Council’s support for the proposal.”

The proposed site is currently a three bedroom/two bathroom house with a decent sized backyard, which was sold for $2.9 million in 2017.

While there is no major structural rebuilding planned, some parts will be changed in the backyard as part of an outdoor play area.

Other planned alterations include reconfiguring the inside, garage conversion and fencing.

This site’s operational hours would follow along the school’s current hours of 8.15am — 3.30pm (schools hours), and the out of school/vacation hours of 7am — 8.30am and 3.30pm — 6pm.
