A young man with a history of domestic violence has been slammed in court for being “a bully” after he spat on his then-partner and smashed up her car’s interior while she drove.

Hillsdale man Harry Kyriakou blamed the woman’s driving, which the court heard he “resented”.

Kyriakou fronted Waverley Local Court on Wednesday pleading guilty to destroying property, common assault (domestic violence related) and contravening an apprehended domestic violence order (ADVO).

The 22-year-old -who the court heard has a previous domestic violence conviction – was the subject of the ADVO protecting the woman when the offending occurred on April 14.

Kyriakou and the woman, now his ex, were driving to lunch when he suddenly “began yelling at the victim as he resented her manner of driving”, police state in tendered court documents.

When the woman tried to drop Kyriakou off somewhere, he held the door open and prevented her from reversing the vehicle.

Soon he started yelling at the victim, which caught the attention of bystanders.

Police state Kyriakou “yelled at the victim to pull into the car park located across the road“.

The woman “believed this was to attract less attention from members of the public”.

Kyriakou “began calling the victim a “b--ch” before spitting at her“, causing saliva to land “on the victim’s chest.”

He began pulling on a screen in the car and the woman struck him in the face and tried to run. A bystander stopped to ask if she was okay, the court heard.

Kyriakou grabbed the victim’s forearm to prevent her leaving and smashed the screen, which was worth $2400, while verbally abusing the woman and telling her “f--k you, b--ch”.

She fled and Kyriakou followed her, asking her not to call the police.

The next month, Kyriakou sent her a series of violent text messages.

“I hope you f--king get in a big car crash or something happens to you b--ch and I wish I’m there or I see it cause trust me I won’t be helping you I’ll let you rot to death because of what you’re doing now,” one text read.

In court, the defence said Kyriakou pleaded guilty at an early opportunity and was remorseful.

The court heard Kyriakou was “a victim” in a previous car crash and was concerned about how his then partner was driving at the time of his offending.

“It was a spontaneous reaction your honour, it was an outburst,” the defence lawyer said.

But Magistrate Jennifer Milledge dismissed the submission as “rubbish” and described the DV offending as “controlling” and “disgraceful”.

“You’re just a bully,” she said, adding Kyriakou was “completely unimpressive”.

“(You) need to get real for the first time in your life,” she warned.

Kyriakou was convicted and sentenced to a 30-month community correction order (CCO).

“You do something about your behaviour and you do something quickly about it,” Ms Milledge added.
