An eastern suburbs man will learn his fate in court after he drove through a red traffic control light and attempted to evade police while driving under the influence of drugs.

Harley Bud Lester, the son of former Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and Sydney Roosters winger Gavin Lester appeared in Waverley Local Court before Magistrate Ross Hudson on March 15, pleading guilty to drive while under influence of drugs.

Agreed facts reveal the 20-year-old man from Phillip Bay was driving a grey Mazda CX3 with a male passenger on McCauley St, Matraville about 9.45pm on August 9.

When he reached an intersection he stopped at a red traffic control light. He then drove through in front of police officers who activated their warning lights.

Lester then increased his speed and made a harsh turn before he was stopped by officers at the entrance of the Caltex terminal.

When speaking with Lester, officers noticed “a strong smell of cannabis” emanating from the car, his eyes were “bloodshot”, his skin appeared pale and his clothing was disarranged.

Officers told Lester he was stopped due to disobeying the traffic control light and attempting to evade police.

When questioned about the smell of cannabis, he told police he had “just finished a smoke”.

After completing a sobriety assessment, police formed the view Lester was “moderately affected by a substance other than alcohol”.

He was arrested for the purpose of obtaining a blood and urine sample from the Prince of Wales Hospital.

A certificate was produced by a government pharmacologist which states “at the time of driving, [Lester] was under the combined influence of Diazepam … and Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol … to the extent that his driving ability would have been impaired”.

The matter will return for sentence on June 14.
