RANDWICK Council will install free public wi-fi, multi-function smart poles and electrical vehicle charging stations as part of its plan to keep up to date with the latest technologies.
The council has produced a Smart City Strategy which outlines how the city will invest in smart initiatives and technologies over the coming decades.
Much of the strategy, which has been put on public exhibition, provides general guidelines and strategies for the future. However, it does name a few projects council officers are already working on.
Free wi-fi in town centres is one such initiative which is intended to attract new customers and encourage them to stay longer.
So-called multi-function poles will also be installed in Coogee Bay Rd as part of the upgrade plans. These poles will provide wi-fi, CCTV and, in the future, will also be able to provide lighting, charging stations and environmental sensors.
Randwick Council is also installing electric car charging stations as more people make the switch to electric vehicles.
Other ideas mooted include smart parking sensors, a shared e-bike system, investment in smart lawnmowers, shark detectors and digital information boards at beaches. The strategy was approved at Councillor Lindsay Shurey’s final council meeting as mayor.
“It is about getting ahead of the game,” she said. “I think it will lead Randwick to be a smart city leader.”
