Former Beauty and the Geek contestant Jordan Finlayson sentenced for drug driving

A former reality show contestant who ploughed her car into a western Sydney road barrier in a drug-induced state – while she was on parole for drug supply – has learned her fate in court.

An ex-Beauty and the Geek contestant who crashed her car into a road barrier in a drug-fuelled state, while she was on parole for drug supply, has avoided jail for her latest brush with the law.

Embattled former NRL cheerleader Jordan Finlayson became emotional as her solicitor Mina Wassef recounted how a recent drug relapse had landed her back before the court on a string of new charges.

After a period of sobriety, the 2011 Beauty and the Geek contestant was charged when she crashed into a road barrier while she was high on meth in Lidcombe in Sydney’s west at 4am on February 7.

When police arrived on the scene, court documents state Finlayson was unconscious in the driver's seat, before becoming erratic and later leaning over to the vacant passenger seat and saying “hey babe”.

At the time, Finlayson was on parole after she previously received a maximum four year and three month prison sentence for supplying GHB and heroin.

She was subsequently charged again after a random roadside drug test in Sydney’s east returned a positive result for meth in July.

Finlayson ultimately pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of drugs, driving with drugs in her system and possessing prohibited drugs.

The court also called up a community correction order previously imposed against Finlayson for possessing identity information after she photographed credit cards belonging to men at a bucks’ party she was working at as a waitress.

At Downing Centre Local Court on Friday, a police prosecutor strongly argued Finlayson should receive a custodial term because previous supervision and drug rehabilitation had not prevented her from offending again.

“It’s apparent she was on a community correction order, she was on parole for a very serious drug matter, she was on conditional liberty as well as the fact she committed these with convictions for like offences,” the prosecutor told the court.

The prosecutor submitted supervision and rehabilitation had failed to prevent Finlayson from continuing to commit drug-related offences and an intensive correction order or a prison term was necessary.

But Mr Wassef said Finlayson had significantly turned her life around and had recently attended full-time rehabilitation.

“We have a young woman who, notwithstanding the experience in custody, relapsed,” Mr Wassef told the court.

“She has a substance abuse issue which, for lack of a better term, plagues her due to a number of factors, one being mental health.”

The court also heard Finlayson would be able to do community service as part of any sentence imposed.

Magistrate John Macintosh acknowledged it was lucky Finlayson had not seriously injured herself or others in the disturbing crash.

He convicted Finlayson and sentenced her to an 18-month supervised community correction order, 150 hours of community service, a $500 fine and a two year driving disqualification.

No action was taken on the breached community correction order for possessing identity information.
