A female parking ranger has allegedly been assaulted in Randwick just hours after hundreds of community members gathered for a march to stop violence against women.

About 9.40am on Friday, an 18-year-old man allegedly approached a 61-year-old female parking ranger and assaulted her, while she was patrolling Arthur St near the Randwick town centre.

The council reported that she was struck twice in the “unprovoked attack” while police said she was pushed. The alleged assault caused the woman to fall backwards.

The man then allegedly took her phone and digital device and threw them into a hedge.

The man was restrained by fellow rangers and passers-by.

Police arrived and arrested him, taking him to Maroubra police station where he was charged with common assault.

Paramedics attended but the woman did not suffer any injuries.

Randwick Mayor Danny Said slammed the man’s alleged behaviour.

“It is absolutely disgraceful that anybody should think it is appropriate to assault a person just going about their job. Nobody deserves this,” Mr Said said.

“Rangers have a tough job at times but they have an important role to play and deserve to be able to go about that job without fear of intimidation or assault.”

He thanked those people who stopped to help the woman and detain the alleged attacker.

Earlier in the morning, Randwick Council and Eastern Beaches police held a Step Out Speak Out walk from Randwick to Coogee, replacing the popular White Ribbon Walk held in previous years.

Hundreds of community members took part to take a stand against violence towards women and to raise awareness about domestic violence.

School students and representatives from the Roosters and Rabbitohs were among those who took part.

The 18-year-old man is due to front Waverley Local Court on Wednesday, December 18.
