A former Home and Away star accused of a bloody assault of his friend has claimed he has been victim of “extreme coercive control and abuse” by his mother and compared his situation to former pop star Brittany Spears.
Felix Dean rose to prominence when he was only 10 years old starring in the role of VJ, the on-screen son of longtime Home and Away cast member Ada Nicodemou.
The 27-year-old appeared at Downing Centre Local Court via video link on Friday where he represented himself as he pleaded not guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and sought to be released on bail.
Police allege in court documents Dean assaulted a man “thereby occasioning actual bodily harm to him” between 10.15am and 10.30am on August 1 at Botany.
He was arrested shortly after.
In applying for his bail, Dean said he had endured “extreme coercive control and abuse” by his mother.
“[The] blood on the pillow was very old … also this person … was my friend … was staying at my place,” he said.
Dean said he had been applying for jobs after recently being released from jail but it was a “dead end” due to his criminal record.
He proposed to report daily to Mascot police station and undergo any drug and alcohol testing as part of his potential release on bail.
In fighting back tears, Dean said “no one listens to me” and compared his situation to Brittany Spears’ conservatorship with her father but claiming “this is a lot worse”.
He referenced being on “TV a long time ago” before saying “these aren’t crocodile tears” and explained how he couldn’t fix his issues in custody.
Despite the police prosecutor saying he was on parole for assaults and has a history of violent offending, Dean said the blood found on the pillow was from a cut days beforehand.
“My friend has had numerous nosebleeds before,” Dean said.
Magistrate Miranda Moody ultimately denied bail, saying there was a “strong case” against him and custody was inevitable if he was convicted.
The matter will return to court in September.
