The high-rise transformation of Eastgardens is set to continue with developer giant Meriton lodging new plans for almost 450 units in the suburb.

Former industrial land at 128 Bunnerong Rd and 120 Banks Ave would be turned into two towers standing 18 and 19 storeys tall as part of a $156.2 million development proposal lodged to Bayside Council.

The development would include 449 units, a child care centre and 630 car parks across four basement levels.

There would also be shared recreational facilities such a 20m long swimming pool, outdoor BBQs, lawn areas and a gym.

The proposal is part of the second stage of Meriton’s mammoth Pagewood Green project which involves turning the former Holden and British American Tobacco site into 4023 units.

The second stage of the project is planned to be built in nine separate stages with the current proposal making up the largest section of the site.

In plans to Bayside Council, Meriton said the project would address increased housing demand in the eastern suburbs.

The project includes a communal swimming pool.

“(The development) provides a high concentration of new housing in close proximity to major transport routes, employment and services,” the company said.

“The proposal includes a child care centre for young families within the immediate and wider development.

“The wider site also includes the provision of shopping facilities that are within walking distance and close proximity to existing and planned facilities and services thereby reducing their need to travel further afield to meet their basic retail needs.”

The development would stand up to 19 storeys tall.

Meriton bought 10.5ha of the Pagewood Green site for $140 million in 2013 and a further 6ha for $90 million in 2015.

A concept development application for the entire site was approved in late 2020 by the Sydney Eastern City Planning Panel.

The latest plan is currently under assessment and has been referred to the Sydney Eastern City Planning Panel for consideration.
