“Reading is essential for those who seek to rise above the ordinary.”
That quote from author Jim Rohn sums up well the concept behind the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge, which is currently running in schools across the state.
Coogee Public School teacher and librarian Thea Tyler said the entire school was taking part this year and older students were encouraged to read 20 books between the start of the year and August 30 while logging them online.
Meanwhile, younger students in kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 read books with their teachers in class.
“The whole school is asked to do it,” she said.
“The whole idea is to get the children to read beyond what they usually would and to read something different.
“Sometimes you get stuck in series that you really like and the challenge is there to encourage them to try something new.”
Class 4S was the first class at the school to complete the challenge this year.
