The Coogee Oval scoreboard will be officially renamed The Ella Brothers/Whitney Scoreboard ahead of the Argentina vs Randwick rugby match — a game close to selling out.
Randwick Council voted unanimously on Tuesday to allow for the scoreboard to be named after rugby greats Mark, Gary and Glen Ella and cricketer Michael Whitney.
Council has also funded the project $5000.
The scoreboard — which was upgraded earlier this year — will be officially unveiled with the new name before the highly-anticipated Pumas match on September 7.
The Ella brothers and Whitney will be on hand for the unveiling.
Tickets are limited to the match, with 2500 tickets already snapped up.
Randwick Rugby Club and Randwick Petersham Cricket Club worked together to decide a fitting name for the scoreboard as the main users for the oval.
Randwick Rugby Club general manager Mark Harrison said it was fitting to have the scoreboard named in honour of the club greats.
“Coogee Oval is an iconic venue and the scene of so many memorable moments in both Randwick Rugby and Randwick Petersham Cricket Club’s rich history,” he said.
“The Ella brothers and Mike Whitney are revered figures in our clubs, across the district and on a global scale.
“It is so fitting that this new scoreboard will be jointly named in their honour.
“We are truly grateful to Randwick City Council for this upgrade, which will benefit all community sporting groups who play at Coogee.”
The Argentina national rugby team will be staying in Coogee for a nine-day training camp before their Rugby World Cup campaign in Japan.
Tickets to the Pumas versus Randwick rugby match can be purchased on the Randwick Rugby Club website.
