We asked our readers to vote for their favourite watering hole in the southeast, and the iconic Coogee Bay Hotel edged out the competition to claim the top spot.
Coogee Bay Hotel’s managing director Christopher Cheung said it was a “great honour to be recognised by the local community” and gave credit to the venue’s staff.
“We pride ourselves on creating exceptional experiences and we continually challenge ourselves to keep delivering on this,” Mr Cheung said.
A hotspot for locals since 1873, Mr Cheung said Coogee Bay Hotel “isn’t just a pub”, as demonstrated by the venue’s dynamic bars, dining, accommodation and the alfresco beer garden which is great for soaking up the sun in summer.
The buzzing atmosphere at Selina’s continues to draw in crowds of live music lovers who enjoy homegrown music.
“In an era which has seen over 170 live music venues close in recent years, Selina’s continues to be a place where people can enjoy Australia’s best acts in a safe environment but without inflated ticket prices,” Mr Cheung said.

Also setting the Coogee Bay Hotel apart from other pubs and bars is the “eclectic mix” of locals and international visitors who come to enjoy spaces like the Beach Bar.
“People love to come to the Beach Bar. It’s essentially a goldfish bowl where people relax in the best corner location in Coogee to take in all that is happening outside,” Mr Cheung said.
If having a cosy drink away from the lively crowd is more your speed however, the Arden Lounge is a great place to sink into a deep leather couch and have a yarn.
Mr Cheung said the hotel’s most “loyal patrons” can be found in the Sports Bar, where sports enthusiasts gather to barrack for their favourite teams on the two mega screens and 15 televisions.
Local families can often be found enjoying the chilled dining experience, seafood meals and ocean views at the Coogee Bay Hotel’s Brasserie which is open for breakfast lunch and dinner every day.
With seasonal menu changes and unique poke bowls (diced raw fish with rice noodles and vegetables), the Brasserie offers up more than just your average pub grub.
