A search for a missing Maroubra man has ended tragically overnight, after his body was found at a popular Sydney beach.

At around 6.30pm on Wednesday, officers from Eastern Beaches Police Area Command were called to Coogee Beach where they found the 54-year-old’s body.

The discovery comes days after police made a public appeal for help to find the man, who had told his family on Saturday he was going for a swim at Maroubra.

After failing to return home, police were notified Sunday and a search was initiated.

While the body is yet to be formally identified, police are liaising with the man’s family.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

The man was last seen swimming at Maroubra on Saturday evening.

The death brings the weekend drowning toll to four, after three men, aged 42, 44 and another in his 50s, died between Seal Rocks on the Mid North Coast and Catherine Hill Bay on the Central Coast.

The body of a man, aged 44, was found floating in the ocean off Swan Bay, 20km west of Nelson Bay, on Saturday.

Later that day, emergency services were called to Ghosties Beach — also known as Timber Beach — at around 5pm to reports an unresponsive man had been pulled from the water unconscious.

The 42-year-old man could not be revived and died at the scene.

On Sunday evening a man in his 50s was seen struggling in a rip at Treachery Beach near Seal Rocks.

Emergency services responded and pulled the man from the water in tricky conditions, however he died at the scene.
