A decision on a contentious $111 million upgrade of the Coogee Bay Hotel has been postponed yet again.
The mammoth plans lodged in July last year would see the iconic live music venue Selina’s nightclub demolished for a six storey shop top housing development, including an eat street, supermarket, ground level retail, 60 residential units and three levels of basement parking.
The heritage-listed hotel and beer garden would be retained.
A determination was initially due to be made at a planning panel meeting in December, but was put off when the applicant was ordered to alter their plans and bring them to the next planning panel meeting on March 17.
The NSW Department of Planning and Environment has revealed that meeting did not go ahead because the applicant needed more time to work on design changes in response to issues raised by the council, community, and the panel.
The proposed revamp quickly attracted criticism as it was revealed the proposed 23.3m site was nearly twice the legislated maximum building height and almost 20 per cent over the maximum floor space ratio.
A petition opposing the development garnered more than 8000 signatures, with residents concerned it would block their ocean views.
Coogee MP Marjorie O’Neill has been an outspoken critic, slamming the “atrocious” plans for their sheer size and threat to the village feel.
According to planning legislation, the panel cannot determine the proposal until the applicant finalises the amendments and they have been assessed by Randwick City Council.
Randwick City Council and Coogee Bay Hotel operator C!NC Hotels managing director Chris Cheung have been contacted for comment.
