Captain Cook statue vandalised in Randwick, police investigating

Police are investigating the vandalism of a Captain James Cook statue in Randwick. It is the second Captain Cook statue to be vandalised in Sydney in the space of a day.

A Captain Cook statue in Randwick was vandalised with black spray paint on Sunday.

Randwick Council staff have since removed the graffiti from the sandstone statue and police are investigating.

Police are asking the public for help as they would like to talk to any witnesses.

It is the second reported incident of a Captain James Cook statue being defaced in Sydney over the weekend.

A similar statue in Hyde Park was also vandalised with spray paint. In both incidents, the phrase "no pride in genocide" was sprayed onto the statues.

“Randwick Council Rangers discovered graffiti on the Captain Cook statue located on Belmore Rd, Randwick early on Sunday morning,” a council spokesman said.

“Our graffiti removal team attended the site on Sunday and was able to remove the graffiti from the sandstone statue. We are currently working with local police who are investigating the vandalism.”

Two people have been charged over the Hyde Park incident.

However, no-one has been charged over the Randwick incident as of Monday morning.

Police said the incident happened between 8pm on Saturday and 8.45am on Sunday.
