An “intoxicated” Canadian citizen has been charged after he was accused of trying to open an emergency door on an aircraft mid flight. Here is what we know.

A ‘drunk’ Canadian citizen allegedly tried to open the emergency door of a passenger jet – two hours into a flight from Vancouver to Sydney – at 30,000 feet in the air.

The Australian Federal Police will allege in court that on a May 14 flight from Vancouver to Sydney, a passenger noticed 33-year-old Rahulreet Mann attempting to open the emergency exit door before he was wrestled away by others on board.

Mann was then allegedly taken by airline staff and moved to the back of the aircraft, where he was supervised for the remainder of the 15-hour flight.

It is understood the incident occurred on a Boeing 777 Air Canada flight.

It will be alleged the 33-year-old was drunk at the time of the incident.

The man was charged by the AFP upon arriving into Sydney Airport and entered early pleas of not guilty in Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court, where he faces a maximum penalty of $5,000 and/or two years imprisonment.

AFP Detective Inspector Dom Stephenson said the AFP was committed to supporting airport staff and ensuring all travellers experienced a safe journey from their departure through to their arrival at their destination.

“The AFP and our aviation partners have no tolerance for anti-social, violent or dangerous behaviour and we will take action,” he said.

“Passengers expect to feel safe and should not have to witness or endure intoxication or reckless behaviour.”

In February, an American Airlines flight descended into chaos after another passenger was duct taped to his chair after he allegedly tried to open an emergency exit door.

Meanwhile, in August last year Sydney Airport was shut down after Muhammad Ali Arif, 45, was arrested on-board Malaysian Airlines flight 122, after claiming he had a “bomb” in his bag.

He faced Downing Centre Local Court after being charged with two counts of making a false statement and not complying with directions.

Arif isn’t expected to face trial until 2025.
