The long-running Botany Golf Club has closed its doors after going into administration on Tuesday.
However, Bayside Council has assured golfers the popular nine-hole course will remain open, where they can still pay green fees through the pro shop, which will also remain open.
It is understood the club recently received a large invoice from council for an outstanding balance.
Botany Golf Club operated the club building at the course on Foreshore Rd and stated on its website it offered “the cheapest bar and bistro prices in the eastern suburbs” and was “an ideal spot for a family get together or social catch up with friends”.
The club posted a message on Facebook on Tuesday which quickly received hundreds of comments mostly in support of the beloved club.
“It is with heavy hearts we advise you as of Tuesday 27th August, Botany Golf Clubs doors have been closed indefinitely, we have gone into administration!” the post read.
“We would like to thank all of you who did support us over the years.”
Bayside Council released a statement on Tuesday letting people know the course would remain open for the public.
“Historically the pro shop and the nine-hole golf course has always been managed and operated by the local council,” the statement read.
“The closure of the Botany Golf Club does not impact the operation of the golf course. For anyone wanting to play golf visit the pro shop as usual.”
Council also confirmed the fees for playing remained the same.
Maroubra state Labor MP Michael Daley said it was sad to see the club close and it was important the course was preserved as green space and not given to developers.
“Botany Golf Club has served our community for many decades,” he said.
“It is a very sad day to see its doors close. Thank you to all the members who put their hearts into this club for many years.
“The first priority for our area must be to preserve this green-space for community usage. Apartments at this site would be totally unacceptable.
“I look forward to hearing proposals from Bayside Council to protect this precious land for the community and sporting uses and not developers.”
